Red-Tailed Hawks
Have you ever seen a majestic red-tailed hawk? Native to North and Central America, these impressive raptors are stunning to behold. If you see a red-tailed hawk, as pictured in this article, then you’ve been led here for a reason! There are many species of hawks, and they all carry the symbolism of a messenger. We’ll explore additional symbolism specific to the red-tailed hawk.
The Red-Tailed Hawk serves as a powerful spiritual symbol, often associated with vision, intuition, strength, and transformation. In various cultures, especially within Native American traditions, this majestic bird is regarded as a messenger from the spirit realm, guiding individuals toward clarity and deeper understanding.
While recuperating at home from knee surgery following a car accident, I decided to enjoy an unusually warm November day outside. I positioned my lounge chair on the other side of the pasture fence to be close to my two horses, relishing their presence and vocalizations. I remember how warm the sun felt on my face while I watched the fluffy clouds shift shapes. At that moment, two magnificent red-tailed hawks began circling above, their red tails spread out and bursting with color. I was mesmerized by their beauty and wished for them to stay.
It was at that moment in time that the red-tailed hawk entered my life, ushering in a new phase of growth. From that point on, I noticed them almost daily; however, it would be ten years before they played an important role in my life. During that ten-year period, I had to navigate a marriage, followed by a tumultuous divorce, an interstate move, and a resettling into a new life in North Carolina. The story of their reintroduction will follow their incredibly awesome spiritual symbolism.
Spiritual Symbolism of the Red-Tailed Hawk:

Back in 1999, the red tails appeared as I entered a transformative and karmic chapter in my life.
Reflecting on that time and their symbolism, it’s clear they brought me strength and power to navigate that period. Fast forward to 2009, when I visited a local raptor center at the suggestion of one of my best friends. We paid a small fee and set off down the trails, map in hand. I remember coming upon a large flight enclosure housing Harris Hawks, and one of the volunteer caretakers had just entered to feed them. At that moment, I told my friend, “I want to do that!” The following week, I filled out a volunteer application indicating my desire to train in caring for the resident birds. My application was accepted, and training was scheduled. On my first day of orientation and training, it was announced that they urgently needed people to assist with injured raptors in the hospital. Something urged me to switch, so I did. During my initial weeks of training, we covered the basics, and once a confident comfort level was achieved, we progressed to the next stage, which involved handling the birds.
I was partnered with a seasoned volunteer, and my first assignment was to catch and weigh an injured red-tailed hawk. The enclosure was smaller, but this girl didn’t need too much space because she was unable to fly. It was unclear what had caused the severe damage to her feathers, but it had rendered her flightless. She was to remain in our care until she molted the following spring. As we entered the enclosure, she was perched on a thick tree branch about hip level to me. I had my gloves on and had been prepped on the art of grabbing, which needed to be quick to minimize stress on the bird and mitigate injuries. I remember my heart racing, and I was hesitant, but as I calmly approached her, she didn’t move. It was as if she was saying to me that she knew I needed to learn this and that she was going to help. I kid you not, she let me walk right up to her, place my hands around her legs, lift her up, and carry her to be wrapped and weighed. I was so in love with her that I remember saying I didn’t want to let her go. How did I go from ten years ago, watching them soar so beautifully in the sky, to actually holding one? I felt so many things—honored, grateful, love, amazement. I remember putting a note in her medical chart asking to be the only one every Sunday to feed and handle her.
Spring arrived, and as expected, she was shedding those mangled feathers while new ones emerged. I was ecstatic! Within three months, the new feathers had grown in, and she advanced to a large flight enclosure to regain her flight muscles. July came, and she was ready to be released. The veterinarian on staff understood how attached I was to her and how invested I had been in her journey for months. He pulled me aside before I left and expressed his wish for me to release her back into the wild. Gosh…this brings me to tears as I write this.
The goal is always to ensure they are cared for and released back where they belong. No training prepares you for the range of emotions you experience when you set them free again. I drove her an hour outside of town, deep into farm country, and found what I felt was the perfect spot. Carefully carrying her in the transport box, I walked toward an area near the trees, my heart swelling with happiness that she was finally going home, and breaking because I would miss her terribly. I told her, “thank you…thank you for trusting me and for helping me grow.” I envisioned opening the box and her hesitating to fly off to deliver her own message back to me. That didn’t happen…she bolted the moment that lid lifted and was gone in three seconds flat. I was left sobbing in the dirt. HA!
She was large, beautiful, trusting, adaptable, patient, and intuitive. She was my teacher, preparing me for the next eleven years of rehabilitating these glorious creatures.
My personal connection with the Red Tails is why I share this wisdom with you today. If you encounter these majestic raptors, recognize that there is a profound reason for it.
